‘Non-Chinese Speaking Walking to Learn Chinese’ Project Walking Tour
Last week, a group of non-Chinese speaking (NCS) students, led by writer Mr Tsui Cheuk-yin, went on a culturally enriching learning tour around Yau Ma Tei.
The teachers and students first played riddles in the open space in front of the Tin Hau Temple, and then visited the school inside the temple to experience the feelings of Hong Kong in the past.
Afterwards, the teachers and students split into two groups and travelled along Shanghai Street to look for the ‘Steamer Basket’ and the ‘Big Bowl for Grandpa’, and then strolled to the Red Brick Building ----, which was originally the engineer's office of the old Water Supplies Department's pumping station at Shanghai Street and was completed in 1895, and then to the Hong Kong Museum of History. On 18 December 2009, it was graded as a Grade I historical building by the Hong Kong Antiquities and Monuments Office.
After the visit, the students were divided into different groups and purchased the designated fruits from the fruit market. Look! All the students were able to complete their tasks and returned to school with a full load of fruit.
The Education Bureau (EDB) has invited our school to participate in the ‘Non-Chinese Speaking Walking to Learn Chinese’ Pilot Project, which aims to enhance students' language proficiency and interest in language learning through reading texts written by local writers based on the Hong Kong community and study tours, allowing students to visit and observe the community, and to make connections with the texts to deepen their understanding of the community.
